Skin cancer is on the rise, and it is uncommonly high in Oregon.
Oregon is ranked in the “TOP 10” for melanoma rates. Melanoma is the least common form of skin cancer, yet is the type that can kill and disfigure.
The solution is early detection.
OHSU’s Dept. of Dermatology has started a state-wide public health campaign to detect melanoma early, when it’s still treatable and lives can be saved. Join the “Skin Crew” of skin-aware professionals. Help your clients live long and happy in their healthy skin.
SKIN CANCER IS THE MOST COMMON CANCER IN THE U.S. MELANOMA RATES DOUBLED BETWEEN 1982 AND 2011.
EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY, ONE AMERICAN DIES FROM MELANOMA – ALMOST 10,000 PEOPLE PER YEAR
MELANOMA IS THE ONLY CANCER THAT CAN BE DETECTED WITH THE NAKED EYE.
MOST MELANOMAS ARE FIRST NOTICED BY PATIENTS THEMSELVES, OR THEIR PARTNERS. THIS IS PRECISELY WHY WE NEED YOUR EYES TO HELP YOUR CLIENTS WITH EARLY DETECTION.
Why YOU are important:
• You’re our front line of defense. Why? Because you see more skin each day than anyone else
• Your clients trust you
• You can watch for changes in mole shape, size and color, since your clients return regularly for services
• You can find hidden moles your clients can’t see themselves
• There are people who don’t visit doctors often who still see you regularly
What YOU can do:
• Get certified – take the FREE “Skinny On Skin” course. Click HERE
• If you see a suspicious mole, hand them a Client Card and encourage them to see a medical provider
• Encourage use of the free Mole Mapper tracking app for iPhone Molemapper.org
• Engage with us on social media

CONSIDER THIS FACT:
The approximate cost of treating a single patient with late-stage melanoma is an astonishing $1,000,000.
It follows, then, that early detection doesn’t just save lives, it also saves Oregon’s health system.
